Lowrider

Adelaide's iconic Lowrider are a testament to the fact that the most integral part of being a successful band is making good music. With no gimmicks, special effects or record label backing, this foursome managed to build a reputation as one of the country's most incredible bands without so much as an EP to their name.
Two albums and hundreds of live shows later, Lowrider are undoubtedly one of the most critically acclaimed acts to emerge from Australia over the past decade. With smoothly delivered vocals over a simple ensemble of beats, bass and keys, Lowrider create an immaculate fusion of soul and funk. Lowrider are a collective, a real band and an indication that musicians still get in a room and jam even in the digital era. Emerging onto the Adelaide music scene in late 2003, the foursome met through the city's tight knit music community after playing in different bands. Brothers Paul and John Bartlett aka Mr Cee and Papa John, teamed with Scott Duncan aka Scotty D and Joe Braithwaite to form Lowrider.
Lowrider's distinct sound has been developed organically drawing from very diverse influences including Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, The Roots, Mos Def and Erykah Badu. Lowrider will not conform to any genre or creed and have let their sound develop organically, leaving the onus on the listener to define what they are hearing. The end result is something that is undeniably soulful musical excellence of the highest calibre. After putting out their seminal self-titled debut release and moving thousands of units at live shows alone, Lowrider followed up with one of the most lauded Australian releases (from any genre) of the last few years, 2008's Diamond Amongst the Thieves. On the back of the album's massive buzz, Lowrider hit the road for numerous national sell-out tours over the course of the year, wrapping things up by landing the major support slot on December's nationwide Alicia Keys tour.
Although the prodigal band have already achieved so much in such a short amount of time, the common consensus seems to be that things are only going to get much, much bigger for these boys in the very near future and who are we to argue?
